Nightlife in Majorca & Menorca

Majorca

Palma de Majorca, like most of the Mediterranean cities, comes to live at night. Strolling along the small streets, admiring the illuminated cathedral and having a drink on one of the many terraces are a true pleasure. There are two main spots in Palma where the good nightlife is concentrated. La Lonja and La plaza de la Drassana where musical bars and pubs are abundant on one side of the city, and el Paseo Marítim with its many bars, clubs and terraces on the other side. Most clubs welcome a very internationally diversified audience every night. One of the best-known discotheques in Palma is Pachá. The locals of Palma prefer going to the area called Can Barbara. Finally there is la plaza Gomila where adolescents usually spend their night. It’s better not to stroll along the city on your own at night. Especially the area Sa Calatrava in the east of the historic center can be risky.

The biggest discotheque of Europe is located in Magaluf on Majorca. The BCM has five bars, 46 000 watt sound, a swimming pool and huge video screens. This renowned club often offers live concerts and accommodates many famous DJ’s every year.

The club scene in Palma is small but improving, with more and more leading European DJs visiting the city. The city’s clubs are never worth investigating until around midnight; entry charges cost anything between €6 and €24, depending on the night and what’s happening.

The Santa Barbara area, just south of Pacha club, is currently known for its chill-out and house music clubs such as 113 and Garito, though the names and exact musical styles change from season to season.

List of Majorca clubs:

Pacha: Avgda Gabriel Roca 42 - Raucous club and garden bar with guest DJs from Ibiza, the mainland and the UK playing funky house, plus a little trance and R&B. It’s some 3.5km west of the centre along the waterfront.

Tito’s: Plaça Gomila - With its stainless steel and glass exterior, this long-established nightspot looks a bit like something from a sci-fi film set. Outdoor lifts carry you up from the back entrance on the waterfront Avgda Gabriel Roca to the dance floor, which pulls in huge crowds from many countries with its mainstream house and garage mixes. It’s about 2.5 km west of the centre.

Menorca

The nightlife on Menorca is less abundant, but still very animated. There are nice bars and clubs in the old fishermen towns like Es Castell. In Maó there are some fairly lively bars along the harbour front which stay open until around 2am on summer weekends, as well as a few clubs, which get going around midnight. Maó’s nightclubs are all down by the port – head up Costa d’es General, the ramped lane across from the ferry terminal, to find Tse-Tse, at no. 14, and nearby, Berri and Terminal, all of which come to life after midnight.

List of Maó bars and nightclubs:

Bar Akelarre: Moll de Ponent 41 - Down on the waterfront near the ferry terminal, this is probably the best – and certainly the most fashionable – bar in town, occupying an attractively renovated ground-floor vault with stone walls and a miniature garden-cum-terrace at the back, right at the foot of the old city walls. Jazz and smooth modern sounds form the backcloth, with occasional live acts.

Nou Bar: c/ Nou 1 - The ground-floor café here, with its dumpy armchairs (reserved for members) and gloomy lighting, is a dog-eared old place much favoured by locals. On the corner of Costa de Sa Plaça.

Si Discoteca: c/ Verge de Gràcia 16 - Low-key, late night locals’ joint south of Plaça Reial. Usually open from 11.30pm to around 3am.
